It decomposes at elevated temperatures to generate free radicals, which initiate the polymerization of monomers like styrene, vinyl chloride, and acrylates in the production of polystyrene, PVC, and acrylic resins

    In the composites industry, BPO acts as a curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins, facilitating cross-linking in fiberglass-reinforced plastics. Its decomposition rate can be adjusted using accelerators or inhibitors, allowing precise control over curing times. Proper handling protocols, including PPE (gloves, goggles, flame-resistant clothing) and explosion-proof equipment, are mandatory in industrial settings to ensure worker safety.

    Storage:

    Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) must be stored under strict conditions due to its thermal instability, flammability, and explosive risks. It is typically kept in cool (below 25°C), dry, and well-ventilated areas, away from heat, sparks, and direct sunlight. For added safety, some formulations require refrigeration (2–8°C). Since dry BPO is highly hazardous, industrial-grade BPO is often stored wetted with water or phthalates in HDPE or PVC-lined containers to prevent drying and decomposition.

    Safety measures include using explosion-proof storage cabinets, grounding containers to prevent static discharge, and segregating BPO from incompatible chemicals (e.g., reducing agents, acids, and metals). Fire protection systems, such as CO₂ extinguishers, must be accessible, and spill kits should be available for emergencies

    BPO has a limited shelf life (6–12 months) and must be monitored for signs of degradation, such as discoloration or container damage. Expired or unstable BPO should be disposed of as hazardous waste. Following these protocols minimizes risks of fire, explosion, or uncontrolled decomposition in industrial environments.
